WE HELPED A CHARITY STREAMLINE CREDIT CARD PAYMENTS WITH A CUSTOM SOLUTION

Brief

Our not-for-profit client wanted a better way to securely process credit card payments, and have a seamless experience between web, phone and postal donations. This required integrating their systems with a payment gateway, but there were some complex requirements:

  • The website and backend systems both needed to integrate to the same payment gateway

  • The system needed to be able to switch between two separate legal entities, depending on the product or cause the payment was for

  • Credit cards needed to be stored securely according to Payment Card Industry standards and available to the website and backend systems

  • Monthly credit card donations were to be processed automatically

How We Did It

Credit card payments are not a new idea so we started by seeing if we could find an existing product. We spoke to six different payment gateway providers and evaluated out-of-the-box integration options for each provider and found that there wasn’t a solution ready to go.

The two requirements that emerged as sticking points were dynamically being able to switch between two separate entities and securely storing and sharing credit cards. No existing solution could meet these requirements and work with systems in use. A custom solution was required.

We worked with the creative agency for the website and the chosen payment gateway provider to develop a clear technical design for the solution. We then scripted an integration between the payment gateway and the backend ERP system that could process payments for either legal entity, save credit cards securely and automatically process monthly donations. We worked with the creative agency to integrate the payment gateway into the charity’s website, including syncing transactions and saved credit cards to the ERP system to allowing staff full visibility of online activity.
